Don't Be A Dick
Okay, look. I'm well aware that everyone has bad days. I get it. But there is absolutely no excuse for engaging in hate speech, or promoting a toxic atmosphere in the game or in public spaces. Talk to each other like the adults that we are. Try to resolve it on your own, but if that doesn't work, I'm available to mediate. See the Mod Contact page for information on how to contact the mods.

IC =/= OOC
It's as the tin says. The character can be Lucifer himself, but the player could be the sweetest person in existence. Seriously, a character does not make the mun, or vice versa.

Be 18+
While Rookshire isn't a sex game, we are sex friendly. This is a high stress situation and different characters will choose different ways of coping with that. All adult subjects should be CW'ed, but people forget. Kindly remind them, then let it drop. Seriously, drama about this isn't appreciated by anyone.

Keep Explicit Material Locked
This should be pretty common sense, but I'll throw it here just to be on the safe side. If you want your character to throw a party where there will be alcohol/drugs/sex, CW the alcohol/drugs/sex. Some people are triggered by things. On the same note, hunting logs should also be CW'ed because blood and butchering isn't everyone's cup of tea. Now, I understand that sometimes people forget, so if someone reminds you to lock/CW something, please correct it.

Stay IC
Your characters will evolve throughout the course of the game. Their thought process will change, and maybe even their way of life. That's totally normal. But extreme swings in the characterization without probable cause will be questioned. If you can explain it to my satisfaction with logged proof, sure. If not, it will count as a strike.

No Godmodding
You can write up the coolest post in the world, but unless you and the other player/mod have talked it over, you cannot write the other character's response to it. That is up to them and them alone.

Don't Be Meta
OOC knowledge cannot be used IC. OOC, you might know the answer to a riddle/puzzle, but if your character wouldn't be able to figure it out, please don't be a jerk and solve it anyway. Now, that isn't to say that there aren't backwards ways for those characters to figure things out, but you're gunna have to work for it and keep it IC in the process.

ACTIVITY CHECKS ARE MANDATORY
The AC requirement is one of the following:
- Ten comments
OR
- One log + five comments
If you have been on hiatus for at least a week, you are exempt of AC for the month. If you cannot meet the AC requirements for a month, you will earn a strike.

All Player Characters Must Maintain a Permissions Page
Due to the nature of the game it can be hard to keep track of each other's limits and triggers. To avoid this, all players are required to have an easy to find and up-to-date page on their journal that explains what they are and are not willing to participate in.

IC Actions = IC Consequences
Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Okay, so not the exact right phrase, but the thought is the same. Someone deciding to attempt to rob a store will result the police hunting them down and possibly arresting them, for example. Whether it be good action or bad action, a character will have to deal with the appropriate consequences of said actions.

Strikes
So, I have a three-strike system. Strikes are privately given and tracked, and are a warning for rule breaking. I will always try to talk about the issues privately with the player in question first, and I'll always tell you about the strike if you do earn it. The third strike results in dismissal from the game.

In the event of especially toxic or damaging behavior, such as stalking or harassment, I'm gunna skip the strike system. Refer to rule 1.

Playercesting
Don't do that, you'll go blind.

Exploration

How does exploration work?
While a log detailing the new world will be put up after the storm and all are encouraged to go out and enjoy the new setting, casual strolls or sight seeing doesn’t usually result in finding critical resources. Instead, characters must go out with the specific intent to find things, and that’s where this comes in.

Upon arrival to a new area, a blank outline of a map will be given. The map will be divided up into eight separate sectors. Each sector will take a minimum of two days to completely uncover the entire map and find all the offered resources. Whether this is characters spending the night in a sector or returning to Rookshire to sleep before heading back out is up to the world and the players (kinda hard to camp in a bustling city where they have no currency).

In a similar vein, the building itself will change certain rooms, offering the opportunity for exploration inside as well. Each room is it’s own sector and follows the same time limit as sectors on the outside. A thorough search of all offered resources is not a quick thing.

Exploration, however, is seldom as straightforward as that. I, as mod, will be throwing all kinds of random things at players as they explore. Half buried roots, distrusting locals, amorous wildlife...all of them are cards in my deck of modding. Those exploring the new rooms are slightly safer, but even they will face pitfalls of their own.

It’s not all bad and disasters, though. Most of the time things go perfectly smooth. Resources that can be found vary from food to supplies to absolutely nothing depending entirely on what sector is being searched at the time.

Each month, during the after storm log, I will give the players a goal for food, water, and fuel. This goal must be met in order to comfortably last until the next month. Sometimes, in a world without cities or towns, hunting must be utilized to find food. This can be handwaved if a player is not comfortable threading it out, but the same search time limits apply. If the goal is not met, no one will starve...but there will be a few nights of empty stomachs or cold nights towards the end of the month.

Generally speaking, a character can only search one sector at a time and must return to Rookshire after each sector to resupply, empty their inventory, and rest for at least two days. This is to stop the same characters from doing all of the exploration, allowing other players the opportunity to explore as well. If no one is signing up for exploration, then I will allow the same character to go out again without the usual rest period. This will, however, result in a period of exhaustion for the character.

Multiple people/groups can be searching different sectors at once, but only one person/group is allowed to search a single sector at a time. Adding people to the group does not shorten the length of time needed to fully search an area, but it might increase the amount of resources found. Also, each player is responsible for maintaining their own inventory. I may be the one telling characters what they’ve found, but keeping track of everyone’s everything is a bit beyond my reach. Once the character returns to Rookshire and adds the resources to the main inventory list, their personal inventory will be empty again.

Still want to go out? Good. Fill out the form below and happy hunting.

How do points work?
Points are earned by activity. One comment = one point. A log = five points. Points are totaled at AC every month, during the full moon. Points that have not been totaled can not be spent.

Of course, I’m using ‘spent’ as an OOC term. There are no shops to buy things unless there is a world with them, and even then, points are not IC currency. Instead, they are used by players to procure items for their characters via exploration trips and bartering with locals. ICly, they are requests from characters that have been posted on the big cork board in the entryway so that those exploring the outside can know to bring them back.

To keep things even between players, a point cap of 200 per month is currently in place.

What can be ‘bought’?
Any physical thing. It might not come right away (You’re not going to find a phone in a medieval forest, etc), but it will eventually be found.

Magic and powers can not be purchased, but magical items can. They are subject to the same rules as every other magical item.

Basic pricing
General Merchandise:30-50pts. Backpacks, stationary, books, clothing...all things that are easily found. Nothing too specific, just the absolute basics. The more specific the request (a Batman backpack, a set of dishes with a cherry blossom pattern, etc), the higher the cost. Steak knives fall into this category, not weapons. They are not sharp enough to be used as a weapon, however.

Weapons: 50-100pts. Blunt objects are the easiest to find and thus the cheapest. Blades are the next step up. If it shoots anything from anywhere? Top dollar. Ammo costs extra. Also something to keep in mind, most worlds are not huge fans of strolling down Main St. while packing something that could easily relocate a skull or ten. Weapons are the hardest items to find, and thus take the longest.

Pets/livestock: 100-200pts. So, here’s the thing. Space is, shall we say, limited in Rookshire. There are no pastures, no barns, no way of building either of those things. Large animals will have to have a ward to themselves...if you can even get them up the stairs, that is. Smaller, more personal animals are a little easier to house, but they are another mouth to feed.

It’s not impossible, but it also isn’t easy. Thus, they cost the most, despite them being relatively easy to find.

Magical items: Varies. Each item will have it’s own price. Talk to me about it and we’ll hash it out.

RP is supposed to be a fun past time, not an obligation. Stress, family, moving….life happens and I completely understand that. If you need a break, that is completely understandable, just fill out the form below and I’ll give you the status of AC amnesty as long as your break lasts longer than a week.

FAQ

rookshire_hill: (Default)
Applications
Are Non-Humanoid characters appable?
Yes! But expect some looks from the locals.

Are OCs/AUs/CRAUs appable?
Yes! The mod does reserve the right to accept or decline based on an app by app basis.

What if my character is dead at their canon point?
Bring them anyway! Fatal wounds are healed (scarring is up to the player), but lesser wounds are player discretion.

How many characters can we app?
For right now the character cap per player is one. Depending on interest this may increase to two in subsequent months but will not rise above that.

Are app challenges allowed?
No.

Are doubles allowed?
No.

OOC Information
What is the pacing like?
Rooksire is designed to be a small game to offer the ability to get the same kind of one on one interaction with the mod & NPCs that one would expect from a murder game. The pace, however, will be much slower with a focus on resource gathering and survival. Events will be once a month on the full moon with new worlds opening for exploration after the storm passes. The storm log (while ICly only lasting 72 hours) will be up for a full week. Beyond that explorations and investigation is up to player discretion.

What is the game’s spoiler policy?
In the spirit of fairness, no spoilers for a month and spoilers should be marked until the 2 month point.

What is the 18+ policy?
While Rookshire is not a sex game, we are sex friendly. Put it behind a locked thread. We’re all adults here, if you don’t want to read explicit content, don’t read it. The same goes for other adult themes, such as alcohol or drug use. That being said, please no adult activities for underaged characters on comm.

How is AC handled?
10 comments a month, or a log and 5 comments. However, you do earn points by commenting. The more you tag, the more points you have to spend. There is a current cap of 200 points per month.

Points?
You can spend them to find specific items while exploring new worlds. See ‘points page’ for pricing information.

Hiatuses and drops. How do they work?
Hiatuses are pretty simple. Solo exploration trip of a new world or, if during a storm, the character is simply holed up in their room to ride out the worst of it.

Drops are sudden things. The storm brings in characters...but it can also take them away. If someone drops mid-month, they are considered as on a solo expedition until the storm officially takes them back to their world.

What is the IC:OOC day ratio?
1:1

IC Information
How do characters enter the game? Are there intro logs?
Characters enter the game via the storm. They arrive just as the storm is starting, but before nightfall. Upon arrival, they are about a mile from Rookshire proper and have to run to make it before nightfall. It is generally assumed that characters make it unless expressly stated by the players, in which case alternate arrangements can be made.

There will be a storm log that the mod will put up and new players will enter via that post.

Do characters keep their existing powers?
Yes, but they fluctuate with the moon phases.
New moon = 0%
crescent = 25%
half = 50%
gibbous = 75%
full = 100%

This will mostly be handled via the honor system, but the mod will step in if it seems like players are taking liberties.

My character has a disability or illness! How is this handled?
They are still disabled/ill. Characters arrive with what they have on them at the time of their canon points, so things like wheelchairs, emergency inhalers/meds, those kinds of things are still there, but medications or supplies they don’t have on them must be found in the worlds. That said, there is a pharmacy with limited stock for emergencies.

What is the technology level of the game?
Rookshire was shut down in the early 90’s. The technology of that time is available.

How does magic work in the game?
Innate magical abilities are treated as ‘powers’ and thus ebb and flow with the moon cycle. Magical items also follow this rule.

Magic that comes from an outside source cuts off as soon as that source is no longer in the world with you.

My character's abilities aren't magic, though! It's SCIENCE!!
Science is awesome and we welcome characters to have all manner of advanced or alien technology! Please note, however, tech gadgets and tools (including prosthesis) that are advanced beyond the setting (early 1990s) will wax and wane with the moon cycle just as magic and magitek do. (IE: Bucky's cybernetic arm, Ed's automail, Shiro's Galra or Altean tech arm all would have only the most basic function as a prosthesis during the new and crescent moons and would gain elevated strength, reach, and other abilities during half, gibbous, and full.)

How do our characters understand each other?
Honestly? Handwaved. The storm plopped Common into their heads.

How does the storm work?
The storm happens between 6pm on the first day of the full moon to 6am the day after. (So, if the full moon is the 20th, 21st, and 22nd, the storm would start at 6pm of the 20th and end at 6am on the 23rd.) The nature of the storm changes with the month/world, but it is always epically dangerous. The kind of storm that can relocate a house or endanger anyone outside in it. While not always electrical in nature, there is always a heavy sense of power in the air during a storm.

Can characters die? How is that handled?
Yes, characters can die. Death is not a goal, however. Should a character die, they remain dead for three IC days, then wake up in their bed. New scars are up to the players, but are encouraged.

If the death occurs outside of Rookshire during an exploration trip, all items are dropped. You can, however, recover them by researching the area. As long as locals haven’t scooped them up first.
